Apple files patent application to use iPhone to purchase "to-go" items - no more waiting in lineApple Chief Executive Steve Jobs wants to patent a process that will save customers the hassle of waiting to order a cup of coffee at a local Starbucks or a fresh burger at the nearest fast food restaurant. Even better: the technology would let you jump the line of those ordering in person.

In an application with the U.S. Patent Office published on Dec. 20, the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer and gadget company described a wireless system that would allow customers to place an order at a store using a wireless device such as a media player, a wireless personal digital assistant or a cellphone.

The system could go far beyond the program that Apple announced with Starbucks in September, which allows iPhone users to press a button and wirelessly download the song playing in the background as they sip their soy lattes.

Rumor: Next-gen Apple Newton is a bigger iPhone

Tuesday, 01 January 2008 23:52
Rumor: Next-gen Apple Newton is a bigger iPhoneA contributor to the site Seeking Alpha claims to have "pieced together" a complete picture of the rumored forthcoming Apple ultra-mobile computer. He describes, essentially, a large iPhone with a 5.2" screen that will ship in the second half of 2008.

The device, he reports, will be designed to be "gripped with one hand on each side similar to a Sony PSP."

He claims that a source told him "Apple has shown significant interest in a 5.2***³ 800 x 480 pixel touch screen design by Balda, a German company."

Like the iPhone, the device won't have a physical keyboard, but instead a software-based one used with the touch screen.

Helio launches new Samsung GPS-slider for Koreans

Helio launches new Samsung GPS-slider for Koreans

Helio isn't exactly known for launching new handsets at the almost-dizzying pace that other big-dog carriers like to do, but they've just bumped up their lineup with the Helio Mysto. The Mysto was spotted a couple months ago at the FCC, and it seems Helio's seen fit to launch the sleek-and-slim Samsung slider just in time for the upcoming festivus. As expected, the Samsung SPH-A523 slider phone will be packin' a 2 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, EVDO, and integrated GPS! Helio's all about integrated GPS, and the Helio Mysto doesn't disappoint.

If it looks familiar, it's because you've probably seen it as the Samsung Ultra Edition 10.9. Unfortunately for Yankee-fied Helio fans in the States, the Helio Mysto is being soft-launched through the "Helio powered by SK Telcom" division that targets Korean Americans only. So, if your English is better than your Korean, you're not likely to have a chance at putting the new Helio Mysto in your pocket just yet. The move makes sense, seeing as how the now-major investor in Helio has been South Korea's SK Telecom.

The Helio Mysto should hit the US in January, with some pre-launch sales starting on December 26. Look for a $149 price tag.

Cinemar bringing Mainlobby support to iPhone - control your home with your iPhone

In addition to being able to control lighting, security, home theater gear, thermostats, whole house audio and manage all your movies from a wall mounted touch screen, Mainlobby owners will soon be able to use their iPod Touch or iPhone as a remote. The key to making this work is Mainlobby's built in web server and Safari's extensive AJAX support. Unfortunately, this is only a first look, but these examples will be included in future versions of MLServer. And considering the lead developer on the project plans to use it as his "primary handheld controller," it should mean lots of future development.

Motorola RIZR Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition

While we're waiting for Motorola to finally unveil their Z10 Symbian UIQ based smartphone, they've decided to refresh the Z8 by teaming-up with Ferrari. The end result is way much better looking Z8. It's still much the same old Motorola Z8 but spiced up a tad with legendary Ferrari logos, not that the Ferrari name will make it perform any better, but it will match that just purchased Ferrari.

The only physical difference is that the Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition has red instead of green backlight and comes bundled with two Ferrari video clips, pre-registration to the official Ferrari website, Ferrari mobile content (wallpapers and ringtones), and direct links to the popular online magazines like Top Gear, Auto Express, GQ, Esquire and Autosport.

Motorola Z8 Ferrari should be available in the Ferrari store and Motorola European retail channels sometime in the first quarter of 2008.
