Nokia Has Released a New Version of Maemo for Internet Tablets

Nokia has released a new version of OS2008, the Linux-based operating system use by its N800 and N810 Internet Tablets.

The biggest addition is an auto-notification feature, which automatically checks for new versions of any installed applications and alerts the user. SSU, or seamless software updating, has also been added, offering the ability to update the firmware over-the-air in the future, without needing to flash the entire unit.

The email client has also been completely replaced with Modest, previously a 3rd party application, allowing for better support. The mailbox setup wizard has also been updated, allowing simple setup for nearly any email system.

The Nokia N810, which has a built-in GPS receiver, has also received an update that supports A-GPS when using a cell phone for connectivity. A major complaint when the N810 launched was the slow satellite lock times for the GPS.

The update is freely available through the Nokia Internet Tablet Firmware Update program.
