The current economic embargo against Cuba, held since the 1950s, due to the Communist regime under Fidel Castro, would be loosened to allow Americans to ship cellphones to friends and family in Cuba, asPresident Bush announced. The government in Cuba recently started allowing citizens to own computers, DVD players, cell phones, and other electronics.

Unfortunately, according to Reuters, the average monthly wage in Cuba is US$20, and cell phones there cost US$120 and require a US$120 activation fee, rendering mobile services impossible for most citizens. Bush hopes that Americans will be able to send cell phones as a test to see if the Cuban government is sincere in its efforts.
